The much awaited IPL 2018 player auction got over in Bengaluru between 27-28 Jan, where 169 players were brought by 8 franchises at the auction. Most of the franchises had bought many young players in their squad keeping future in their mind.113 Indians were sold in that 71 are uncapped and most of them will get a chance to display their talent and have a good chance to be future stars of the Indian Cricket. A total of 56 overseas players were brought by all franchises. In this season Nepal player Sandeep Lamichhane will become the first player from the nation to debut in Vivo IPL. India under 19 players were the hottest buys in the auction as some of the franchises invested more money in Youth. It will be a big hype as 2 teams CSK and RR will be returning to IPL setup after Completing their 2 years ban. Now let’s look the analysis of each squad in this season one by one.

Squad Analysis of Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR before the auction retained their two West Indies players Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. They also didn’t retain or use right to match card on Gautam Gambhir who won the IPL twice for the KKR franchise. Later in the press release, KKR disclosed that they didn’t pick Gambhir as the player was not interested to play with KKR and said that he wanted to move with his former team Delhi.KKR also spent entire purse in the auction and surprisingly they will enter IPL 2018 with 19 players which is the fewest among 8 franchises.

Strength

KKR is strong in spin department as they have Narine, Chawla, and Kuldeep who can bowl out the opposition in no time. Narine also provides the team with his explosive batting up the order. KKR has also had explosive batting unit with the likes of Lynn, Uthappa, Russell, and Delport.

The pacing unit will be spearheaded by Starc with the likes of Russell and Johnson who can terrorize the opposition with their pace. They also have Nagarkoti and Mavi who have impressed with their ability to bowl with pace and any one of them will be assisting Starc in the pace department.

They have invested in Youths like Gill, Nagarkoti and Mavi keeping the future in mind and all have a big platform to showcase their talents in this IPL and try to storm into the National squad.

Weakness

The team don’t have a candidate for leading the team and they have a task of choosing either Uthappa or Karthik to lead KKR, but the fact his both of them don’t have a good track record as a captain.

KKR failed to buy experienced Indian batsmen after they lost Yadav and Pandey to other teams. They brought Nitish, Jaggi, Rinku Singh and Apoorv Wankhede to fill their slots, but they can’t be an exact replacement as they all lack experience and haven’t played in IPL before except Rana who had an excellent run with Mumbai in IPL 2017.

They have invested more money in Lynn and Starc and both of them is a high injury prone as both of them missed last year due to injury. Lynn is currently injured and has been left out of Australia’s squad but also KKR went all out to buy him.

As a final say, KKR looks well balanced for time being, but once the IPL starts the lack of inexperienced batting and bowling may bring KKR down to some extent if their star players go down due to injury. The biggest question will be that who will lead KKR team in this year’s IPL.

In my next blog I will be doing the analysis of Mumbai Indians Squad for the IPL 2018.
